Malls like the Toronto Eaton Centre go all out for the holiday season. Every year this mega mall looks to put on an amazing Christmas display.
Toronto Eaton Centre is the largest mall in downtown Toronto and one of the biggest shopping centres in Canada. Suspended from the high glass ceiling is the famous sculpture of flying Canada geese by artist Michael Snow.
In keeping with the modern artistic feel of the centre and it’s famous flock of geese sculpture, we were commissioned to create a herd of 6 giant reindeer sculptures. Installed on the mall floors during the festive season to add some traditional holiday cheer.
The size and scope of these reindeers were breathtaking. Part festive holiday decoration and part contemporary art installation, the statuesque 12m and 8m tall sculptures were individually handcrafted by specialist artisans.
The massive shiny silver reindeers were constructed out of criss-crossing bands of twisted aluminium ribbons. Illuminated with vibrant ice white LED lights and filled with brightly coloured ornaments.
Scattered throughout Toronto Eaton Centre the spectacular standing reindeers were positioned in the mall to enable visitors to walk underneath. Other reindeers were constructed in a grazing pose; located looking over the balcony edges at the shoppers on the various levels. All became iconic pieces and fantastic backdrops for photograph opportunities.
The reindeers generated lots of positive feedback for the centre. It was magical watching people stand under the reindeer, children running around the legs and everyone taking pictures.
